Nanzo-in temple
Nanzo-in temple, located in Sasaguri, Fukuoka, belongs to the Shingon sect of Buddhism.
It boasts an impressive legacy spanning over 1,200 years, establishing its place as one of Fukuoka’s oldest and most venerated temples. Its origins trace back to the Heian period (794-1185) and were attributed to a Buddhist monk named Ninshō, a pivotal figure in propagating Buddhism in Kyushu.
Despite enduring reconstructions due to natural calamities and conflicts over the centuries, Nanzo-in’s core and spiritual essence have always endured. During the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the temple expanded, adorning itself with splendid gardens and statues.
Renowned for its colossal reclining Buddha, it holds the title of the world’s largest bronze statue.
The Buddha lies at a length of 41 meters, stands 11 meters tall, and weighs an impressive 300 tons. This monumental statue portrays the Buddha during the moment of his passing into nirvana.
Nanzo-in serves as the central attraction among the 33 temples constituting the Sasaguri pilgrimage route.
Access
From Fukuoka Hakata Station, you can hop on the JR Sasaguri Line heading to Kido Nanzoin-mae station.
Nanzo-in is just a quick 3-minute stroll from the station.

Nanzo-in goshuin is 300 ¥.
Opening Hours
The temple is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and there is no admission fee.
